How to Clean a Green Pool: Simple 8 Steps Guide
By Troy Townsend | 30th January, 2026
Algae spores constantly enter the pool, brought in by wind, rain, contaminated swimsuits or equipment. The unsightly growth can turn a sparkling pool green overnight.
What you’ll need:
- Stablised TriChlor
- Extreme Algaecide
- Supa Floc
- Algygone
- Phosphate Eliminator
Clean up your green pool by following these simple steps (how-to):
- Have your water professionally tested at your local Clark Rubber store before commencing any chemical treatments.
- Remove all excess leaves and debris from pool. Brush wall, floor and steps. For cartridge filters remove cartridge and reseal filter.
- Adjust pH level between 7.4 – 7.6. Use Filtrite pH Down or Filtrite Pool Acid to lower pH. Use Filtrite pH Up to increase pH. Ensure skimmer and pump baskets are clean and free of debris. Run filter on recirculate for 2 hours and recheck to ensure correct pH.
- Add Filtrite Extreme Algaecide at 2.5 litres per 50,000 litres of pool water. Distribute throughout pool. Run filter on recirculate for 2 hours.
- Add Filtrite Trichlor Granular Chlorine Pool Chlorine at 500gm per 25,000 litres. Premix in bucket of water until dissolved and distribute evenly throughout pool. Alternatively, add 1 litre of Filtrite Liquid Chlorine per 1,000 litres of pool water. Run filter for 24 hours on recirculate.
- Water should be cloudy. If still green, repeat step 4. Run Filter for 24 hours on filter mode. For Cartridge filters, reinstall cartridge.
- Vacuum sediment from pool floor. After vacuuming sediment to waste, run system on filter for 48 (backwashing or cleaning filter ever 12 - 24 hours).
- Add Filtrite Algygone at 1 litre per 50,000 litres pool water to prevent algae growth from recurring. Use Filtrite Phosphate Eliminator to reduce nutrient level, test water for required dose.
If pool has not cleared in 48 hours, you may need to floc the pool using Filtrite
Supa Floc. Use Filtrire Super Floc as per the instructions on the bottle or return
water sample to a Clark Rubber store.
Always follow the manufacturers directions provided on the product.
