Pros and cons of travelling Australia in a caravan
By Clark Rubber | 17th October, 2019Are you planning a once in a lifetime trip around Australia in your caravan? Travelling around Australia in a mobile home and sleeping where you want to (within limits!) can be extremely rewarding, but it's not for everyone.
Here are some of the important points to consider to help you decide whether the caravan life is for you.
Advantages of a caravan holiday
- Freedom – you're on your own time schedule and don't have to worry about bookings, cancellations or check-out times. If you ever feel restless, just start your engine and look for somewhere new.
- Saving money – campsites are cheaper than traditional hotels and motels, especially if you're travelling with kids. A caravan holiday also saves on flights.
- Personal space – you always have a private room and don't have to deal with hotel guests and staff or worry about rules.
- Comfort – when it rains, you'll be warmer in a caravan than in a tent or trailer. With luxury amenities like air-con and a TV, you don't have to miss the comforts of home.
- Convenience – you can take as much luggage as you need, without having to carry it around. Campsites are generally easier to find than hotels and you won't have to struggle with putting up a tent.
- Safety – your family and belongings are safe and secure in a locked caravan.
Downsides of a caravan holiday
Initial cost – caravans can be a significant up front investment and more than paying for a holiday. Over time though, they pay for themselves. You also need to consider the cost of fuel and camping fees.
- More time on the road – if you prefer a relaxing holiday or more time sightseeing, spending so much time behind the wheel may not be for you.
- Reversing – if you have never driven a long vehicle before, reversing can be a challenge at first, but it's something everyone can learn.
- Limitations – caravans allow you to explore lots of places, but there are limitations. You may be restricted by the availability of campsites and suitable parking spaces or limited facilities at certain sites. More affordable caravans lack some of the comforts of luxury models.
- Storage – when your holiday is over, you will need to park and maintain the caravan when not in use.
How to get a good night's sleep
Sleeping in a caravan can be more convenient than booking a different room every night, but there can also be a greater risk of disturbances that could stop you getting the restful sleep you need.
Spending time choosing a quiet camping spot means you are less likely to be disturbed by other campers or traffic noises. Buying a pair of foam earplugs is a small investment that could make all the difference in getting a good night's sleep, and it's even more important to choose a good quality caravan double mattress that gives you the comfort and support you need.
